Seen from the sea or from the promenade that skirts the coastline, it doesn't even look like a single building. It resembles a harmonious, elegant urban ensemble that completes the city's surrounding landscape. This is how the PortoBay Santa Maria was built.
The hotel took its name from the area where it is built and where the settlement of Madeira began in the 1420s. In fact, next to the main door there is still one of the rare vestiges of Funchal's city walls, built in the 16th and 17th centuries. There is therefore no doubt that the Santa Maria is built in the historic centre, on the site where the so-called “arsenal”, a ship repair yard, once stood.
The construction is designed in such a way that all rooms and suites have a sea view. The eyes fall on the harbour area, the ocean, the promenade, and the historic São Tiago Fortress, which is accompanied by the small beach bearing the same name.
The location couldn't be better. Almost everything in downtown Funchal is within walking distance of the hotel. Examples include the Farmers’ Market, the Cathedral, or the College Church, among many other places. The so-called Old Town is an area filled with leisure spots, bars, restaurants, and some nightlife.
The hotel embodies the spirit of the PortoBay group. The décor features soft tones, materials with organic textures, and a service philosophy aimed at building customer loyalty. The comfort standards are high, the rooms are functional, and tranquillity is ensured despite the urban location.
On part of the building’s three-story rooftop, a terrace offers panoramic views. From here, you can also see the houses climbing up the hillside of Funchal. Occasionally, events are held in this space, but on most days, it serves as a peaceful retreat for relaxation and contemplation.
Two pools and two jacuzzi enhance the leisure options. The indoor pool is heated, while the outdoor pool is kept at ambient temperature — which in Madeira means it’s rarely cold, especially for visitors from Northern countries.
Next to the outdoor pool, the Promenade Bar provides food and drinks throughout the day. In the late afternoon or evening, the activity shifts to the Captain’s Bar, ideal for an aperitif or an evening accompanied by live music. The drinks menu is extensive, and the service is warm and dedicated — a quality that extends to all areas of the hotel.
The main restaurant, called Arsenal, is open for dinner. Chef António Nascimento prepares a themed buffet from Saturday to Tuesday, with a different theme each evening. On Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays, the offering is a gourmet menu with four courses. All the restaurant’s cuisine is Mediterranean-inspired.
Breakfast is also served at Arsenal and can be enjoyed indoors or in an outdoor seating area. The buffet is extensive, and there are specialties available to order à la carte.
The spa offers treatments and products from the British brand ESPA. There are massage options for both men and women, as well as for couples. Signature treatments, back, face, and head massages, and express massages lasting 25 minutes are also available.
The PortoBay Santa Maria is an adults-only hotel, which is reflected in its dynamics. There’s greater tranquillity, and relaxation is assured without the joyful energy of children.
