“Cider is my world,” says entrepreneur Márcio Nóbrega, with passion in his eyes, as he tells the story behind The Pommer Pub, his new venue in the Lido area of Funchal, which was created to break with the way this drink is enjoyed in Madeira.
The interior is decorated with soul and attention to detail and even explains the origin of the name. On the wall, among the various meanings, you can read that Pommer derives from “pomme-roi,” a kind of royal apple or the king of apples, possibly given to a gardener for his skill in growing them. Here, every detail tells a story.
Outside, the terrace takes us on a journey and offers the sound of the sea as a backdrop.
The menu features 60 ciders from different parts of the world, carefully selected from the best international producers. The mission, explains the owner, is “to present cider as a sophisticated drink, ideal to accompany meals or be shared in moments of conviviality.” The Pommer Pub focuses on ciders by the glass and promises to launch a future “cider board,” which will allow you to taste different varieties every week.
Márcio Nóbrega is also a cider producer, through the Quinta da Moscadinha brand, with several labels, all available at The Pommer Pub, a space that is the natural evolution of this passion and brings cider to a more urban and international context.
Pommer is a gastropub. And so, the food menu was designed to accompany the drinks, especially the ciders. Inspired by Irish pubs, the menu includes shepherd's pie, short ribs, Irish coddle (sausage with mashed potatoes), and fish and chips, but also pasta, fresh salads, and children's options. Some recipes use cider as an ingredient and create surprising combinations. The desserts follow the same line, with apple crumble and sweets that incorporate Guinness beer or Bailey’s liqueur.
The atmosphere completes the experience. During the summer, the nights are enlivened by outdoor bands. From autumn onwards, The Pommer Pub guarantees music indoors.
