On the São Vicente seafront, in a place where you can hear and smell the sea, there is a building that stands out for its age. It is a century old. It was built in stone and stands out for its shape, resembling a fortification.
It was built with the purpose of serving as a warehouse for goods that traveled from Funchal. Today it is called Porto de Abrigo.
But it is inside that most of the interest lies. This is a wine lounge dedicated to Madeira wines and all the drinks produced on the island, such as rum and beer, not forgetting the traditional regional poncha.
Open until 2:00 am, Porto de Abrigo has a wide range of Madeira wines, from Justino’s and Blandy, aged between 3 and 15 years. Tastings are available and wines are available for purchase.
There is also a cellar of still wines sold by the bottle, with a selection by the glass. And for those who want to enjoy a bottle on site, a cheese board is available.
Bottles of rum, with different levels of aging, are also for sale. But some can be tasted by the glass.
Porto de Abrigo is a good option on the north coast of Madeira. It offers a traditional feel, with basalt stone walls, a wine press inside and many, many bottles.
It has a welcoming atmosphere and a varied selection. And it is worth a visit in itself.
