Pairing a beer inspired by the Pé de Cabra traditional Madeiran drink with chocolate ice cream or molasses cake might, at first glance, sound like a rather odd idea. But in truth, this combination of flavours offers a surprising experience.
In 2019, João Gramilho, owner of the BeerHouse brewery, had the epiphany to create a beer inspired by the traditional beverage. What drew him to this daring idea was the challenge – but above all, the boldness of blending chocolate, wine, beer and lemon in perfect harmony. Thus began a long journey of experimentation, with many trials (and plenty of Pé de Cabra) along the way.
His efforts paid off: Pé de Cabra Oak was named Best Craft Beer of 2024 at the 12th National Competition of Home and Craft Beers, out of around 150 entries. The competition took place in Sintra and also acknowledged Monda – Portuguese Rice Lager (Portalegre) and Battl Snakes (Lisbon), in the Lager, Ale and Experimental categories.
When João Gramilho took over the business in 2017, he confessed – laughing – that he did not even like beer at the time. But with time and training, he not only developed a taste for it, but he also fell in love with everything there is to learn about beer.
The BeerHouse owner shares this achievement with his team, his customers, and all Madeirans – after all, this beer is a tribute to the region.
