The Chapel of Our Lady of the Incarnation, located in the parish of Nossa Senhora do Monte, has always been small enough to accommodate the faith of its faithful.
This place of worship was built in 1470 by Adão Gonçalves Ferreira, one of the first settlers on Madeira Island. The chapel underwent several renovations, and the new Church of Nossa Senhora do Monte was rebuilt after a 1748 earthquake and consecrated on December 20, 1818. The image of Our Lady of Monte has always attracted many devotees and pilgrims.
The recently inaugurated permanent “Echoes of the Past: Memory and Identity” exhibition consolidates this sacred space as a place of pilgrimage. On display in the high choir of the Church of Nossa Senhora do Monte, it stands out for its display of silver objects, such as liturgical pieces that demonstrate the artistic wealth and devotion of the faithful, costumes that illustrate the veneration and care for the patron saint of Funchal and even a relic: the Mortuary Mask of the Blessed Emperor Charles of Austria.
It is also possible to immortalize the visit through Photo Memories, a way of raising funds for future re storation work. The exhibition is open from Monday to Saturday, from 9:30 am to 5 pm, and on Sundays from 12:30 pm to 5 pm.
