Classified as a National Monument since 1910, the Cathedral of Funchal is a landmark in the life of the city, but above all in the lives of Madeirans. The chimes of the bell mark the passing of time, which does not erase the artistic, architectural, historical and even sacred value of Madeira's most important religious temple, built by King Manuel I in 1493.
Recently, the Cathedral of Funchal opened guided tours of the Emanuel Tower to the public. This sensory journey involves climbing 160 steps up a spiral staircase, past the floor of the largest bells to the top, where you can see the mechanism of the famous clock, the hands and the dials and mechanisms of the 4 clocks.
It is an adventure that allows you to discover new views of Funchal. Climb into the city's sky, reaching 55 meters to contemplate the capital's amphitheatre. This is the proposal, which includes a dive into the history of the construction of this imposing monument.
Visits to the Emanuel Tower take place on weekdays at 10:30, 12:00 or 16:00, or at other times for groups by appointment. Tickets cost four euros (three euros for children aged between 12 and 17), which will be used for future renovation work.
