The evening was pleasant. The lights created a pleasant atmosphere. Music by Maya Blandy and DJ Hélio Lucas mingled in the air with the buzz of attendees. This was the first Gourmet Arraial, the formula found by the Casa Velha do Palheiro hotel to celebrate the first anniversary of Oxalis, the Michelin-recommended signature restaurant.
Chef Gonçalo Bita Bota hosted several other chefs, most of whom worked in Madeira and were also distinguished and recognized. Together, they put together this version of a Madeiran festival, with various food stations, from tuna to lamb, ‘espetada’ from Madeira, and even oysters. Each station featured a specialty, with a wide range of flavors enhanced by wines and champagne, but also by Quinta da Moscadinha cider, or the new Madeiran craft beers from Levadia.
The organizers were pleased. Judging by the expression, the customers were too. So much so that the formula, they say, is one to repeat. And there's no shortage of ideas: more chefs, more food stations, more seating.
The lawn next to Casa Velha do Palheiro is the ideal space for this type of event. It's spacious and nestled between the gardens and the hotel, providing the perfect atmosphere for a farewell to summer party.
For the remainder of the year, Oxalis will remain open, with an open kitchen and à la carte menus, as well as tasting menus. It is open to the general public and has been increasingly welcoming outside customers. The restaurant was recommended by Michelin just six months after opening. And it has the potential to grow and gain recognition.
