Madeira once again shone on the international tourism stage, being doubly recognised at the European Gala of the World Travel Awards 2025, held this Thursday in Sardinia.
In the 32nd edition of these awards – often described as the “Oscars of Tourism” – the region was named Europe’s Leading Island Destination for the 11th time since 2013, surpassing competitors such as the Azores, Canary Islands, Ibiza, Majorca, Crete, Cyclades, Sardinia, Sicily, Malta, Cyprus, Guernsey and Jersey.
The Madeira Promotion Bureau (AP-M) also took home the award for Europe’s Leading Tourist Board, repeating last year’s achievement. Other nominees in this category included well-known institutions such as Turismo de Portugal, Turespaña (Spain), Atout France, and national tourism organisations from Germany, Italy, Greece, Austria and Turkey.
The Regional Secretary for Tourism, Environment and Culture and president of AP-M, Eduardo Jesus, highlighted in a press statement that “these awards are the result of the continuous and coordinated work that has been carried out by the Region and by all those who contribute daily to establishing Madeira as a unique and high-quality tourist destination.”
He further emphasised that “these recognitions strengthen the credibility and consistency of the promotional work we have been developing, positioning Madeira among the most prestigious and sought-after destinations in Europe.”
According to Eduardo Jesus, Madeira’s repeated distinction “reflects the international recognition of the authenticity and diversity of our regional tourism offering — a destination that stands out for its lush nature, distinctive culture and identity, and its ability to welcome visitors all year round.”
Regarding the AP-M award, he noted that “it is a recognition that honours a dedicated team whose competence and professionalism have been crucial to the global promotion of the destination,” adding that the organisation “has successfully adapted to new contexts and international market demands, fostering innovative and effective communication.”
He concluded by stating that “these awards honour all professionals in the region’s tourism sector but also carry added responsibility, motivating us to continue investing in quality, innovation and diversification of our offer.”
Established in 1993, the World Travel Awards celebrate excellence across all key sectors of the travel, tourism and hospitality industries.
