Michelin keys in Madeira

Five hotels are in the red guide's new category, based on five criteria.

After years of evaluating restaurants, Michelin has decided to turn its attention to hotels. The promise had already been made and now, for the first time in Portugal, there is the list of restaurants classified with the keys, the new distinction of the red-coat gastronomic guide.

Hotels are classified into three categories: one key, two keys and three keys. This selection is based on five criteria: being a destination in itself: the hotel contributes to the local experience; Excellent architecture and interior design; Quality and consistency of service, comfort and maintenance; Individuality, reflecting personality and authenticity; Ability to offer an extraordinary experience at the right price.

There are no hotels in Madeira in the three Michelin keys category. However, three hotels were honoured in the two keys category.

The Les Suites at The Cliff Bay, owned by the PortoBay group, was recognised for its service and quality as a boutique hotel with sea views. Reid's Palace, a Belmond Hotel, also features in this category, with acknowledgment for the classic and timeless character of this emblematic hotel. The third hotel with two Michelin keys was the luxurious The Reserve, by Savoy Signature.

Two hotels were honoured with one key: Quinta da Casa Branca, an estate in the heart of the city, whose charm comes from its blend of the classic and the contemporary, and the imposing Savoy Palace, which stands out for being a large building with high quality hospitality in Funchal.
